Introduction

Community Medicine is dealing with prevention of disease, maintenance of health & promotion of health with community participation. Health is a state of complete physical, mental & social wellbeing and not merely an absence of disease and hence holistic care is required keeping in mind all the dimensions of health.

History

The department of Community Medicine commenced functioning at Karuna Medical College from the year of 2007.

Community Medicine department, over the span of 15 years has contributed to the domain of primary healthcare by providing Community Physicians who can play the roles of a leader, an effective communicator, an efficient decision maker and a trustworthy manager along with being a health care provider.

At present the department of Community Medicine with all the faculty is flourishing, with determination to take the department to the topmost level of academic excellence on par with radical changes taking place in medical education.

Academic Performance

Karuna Medical College offers quality education & friendly campus. Department of Community Medicine offers undergraduate training with the following teaching-learning methods: theory classes, discussions and interactive sessions, seminars, research projects, clinico-social case studies, health education presentations, laboratory & field work family health surveys and nutritional assessment surveys. They also visit PHCs, CHCs, Anganawadis, subcentres, water purification plant, solid waste management system, sewage treatment plant, hospital waste management etc.

The students excel in academics with high pass percentage, some obtaining distinctions, as well as, 1st class by more than 20% .Student- friendly strategies help to develop their talents and to bring out students’ capability to deliver basic healthcare.

Karuna Medical College has contributed many such vibrant undergraduates to the medical community. The internship is of two months duration which includes posting at Rural Health Centre and Urban Health Centre which equip them with the essential healthcare to the community and also develop communication skills.
