Department of Pathology
The Department of Pathology at Karuna Medical College plays a pivotal role in maintaining quality diagnostic services and shaping competent and compassionate medical professionals. We have dedicated faculty and staff involved in training of undergraduate students in accordance with CBME based academic curriculum for MBBS who also play a pivotal role in providing comprehensive and accurate diagnostic services to support patient care.

The department is committed to training undergraduate students in all aspects of pathology through interactive lectures, practical sessions, demonstrations, and case-based discussions, students to develop a clear understanding of disease mechanisms and their clinical relevance.

Teaching & Training
The department follows the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum prescribed by the NMC. Teaching-learning activities include:

Diagnostic Services
Equipped with modern and advanced diagnostic facilities, the department aims to provide accurate and timely results to support patient care. Our team of experienced faculty and technical staff ensure high standards in providing essential diagnostic services for which we have Internal Quality Control Measures and are enrolled in various EQAS Programmes as below:
Diagnostic services provided by pathology department are
- Histopathological examination of biopsies and surgical resection specimens- Diagnostic services provide reports on roughly 10,000 pathology specimens per year.
- Cytopathology - Diagnostic services provide reports on roughly 8000 specimens per year.
- Hemogram - The Hematology lab is equipped with fully automated 3 part and 5 part complete blood count analyzers and analyses around 250 samples daily.

Blood banking and transfusion services
Since 19/07/2007, approved by the Drug controller & licensing Authority, Government of India, Karuna Medical College Blood Centre has undergone significant modernization to enhance the safety, efficiency and quality of blood transfusion services. It plays a critical role in healthcare, especially for surgeries, trauma care, cancer treatments and managing blood disorders which is in close proximity with emergency department, O.T complex & hospital’s clinical service departments.

- Computerized system used for record keeping and donor management.
- Quality control protocols are followed according to the Drugs & Cosmetic Acts, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (India).
- External quality control is from CMC Hospital, Vellore.
- Modern equipments for component separation, storage, testing etc.
- Trained team of professionals in Blood centre.
- Comply with guidelines from WHO, National blood policies, and Biomedical waste rules.
- Continuous power with backup for equipment and refrigeration for cold chain maintenance.
Research and Innovation
The department actively encourages research among faculty and students, focusing on diverse areas such as cancer biology, haematological disorders, infectious diseases, and community health issues.
Undergraduate students are guided in KUHS Research Appreciation Award, ICMR projects and institutional research initiatives.
