Department of Microbiology

Microbiology is an ever expanding Medical science due to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases at the global level. Clinical Microbiologists assists the clinicians by providing identification of pathogens and suggesting treatment options. Using this information, a treatment can be devised. Other tasks may include the identification of potential health risks to the community or monitoring the evolution of potentially virulent or resistant strains of microbes, educating the community and assisting in preventing or controlling Pandemics, epidemics and outbreaks of disease. The Department of Microbiology can be conceptually subdivided into Academic medicine, Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory and Molecular research Laboratory. The Department of Microbiology offers 24 hours diagnostic services to the Karuna Medical College and Hospital, intents at providing accurate results on clinical material within the shortest possible time. This has been achieved by round the clock laboratory services, online reporting and use of state of the art equipment. It is divided into several sections which are under the control of the Head of the Department. The work was supervised and reports are delivered by the authorized faculty.

It was the initial days and there was lot of team work involved by all the members of the department, to evaluate, verify and implement the different aspects of teaching module for the students and to validate and standardize the laboratory test procedures.

There were the regular inspections by the university and the MCI and had to ensure the maintenance of test performance standards and its records.

The KeralaUniversity of Health Sciences (KUHS). came to existence during the year 2010 and then on the college is affiliated with KUHS

In the year 2012 the department welcome its first post graduate student to pursue MD Microbiology.

The molecular research laboratory (BSL Level 2) was added onto the department to answer the testing needs during the Covid 19 pandemic.

The National Medical Commission had brought in a sea change in the curriculum to mould the Indian Medical graduate. From the year 2021 onwards the II-year MBBS Microbiology curriculum is for a span of one year instead of the earlier 1.5 years.

BSL LEVEL 2 LABORATORY

BSL-2 level laboratory facility including molecular biology setup for virological diagnosis

The Department has one undergraduate practical hall and one demonstration room, library, as well as a museum to support its teaching activities. During the teaching of every topic of Microbiology, the clinical applications are discussed and summarized with clinical correlation. In the practical curriculum students are introduced to problem-based learning along with applied topics.

The state of art laboratory of the department offers a variety of testing methods in diagnosis of infectious diseases. The Department provides laboratory services to both in-patient and out-patients of the attached teaching medical college hospitals and also offers services in bacteriology, serology and parasitology. The Serology department has ELISA system and all the sections are equipped with necessary instruments to carry out their diagnostic work. The Molecular research laboratory has been pivotal during the covid-19 pandemic, by extending the RT-PCR testing.

Our research investigates the epidemiology of resistance in a number of important bacterial pathogens, including Gram-negatives such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii and Gram-positives such as Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase negative staphylococci. Surveillance of the prevalence and mechanisms of resistance in bacterial pathogens is critical to inform treatment guidelines, infection control practices and antibiotic stewardship. The staff are involved in publications in various indexed journals.
