Department of Forensic Medicine
Forensic Medicine is the bridge between law and medicine. The term ‘Forensic Medicine’ was derived from the ‘Forensis’ meaning belonging to the market place or forum, which refers to the “forum’ or public meeting place where legal cases were tried in Ancient Rome.
The department primarily deals with teaching students of MBBS about Forensic Medicine, Toxicology and Medical ethics. We guide them in applying the medical and legal knowledge gained while they practice medicine. We are also making them aware of the importance of medical as well as legal duties
Academic Performance
Among the students appearing for university examination, 15 Percent used to acquire distinction in the subject consistently.

Objectives
At the end of the course every student should be able
- to identify and interpret various types of injuries and their medicolegal importance
- to record dying declaration independently
- to know the procedures involves in the preparation of drunkenness certificate and potency certificate
- to acquire knowledge in forming a member of the medical team in examining cases of forceful sexual intercourse in order to give opinion in the identification and interpretation of various injuries in the body of the victim.
- to identify injuries and their importance in a case of battered baby syndrome
- desirable to accompany one of the faculties to a honourable sessions court in giving evidence during a criminal trial
- to distinguish criminal and civil responsibilities of a mentally ill person
- to classify poisons with respect o the mechanism of action, fatal dose , clinical presentation, management and post-mortem appearance. Also to comment on the manner of administration
- to know how to differentiate between criminal and civil negligence and also the method that can be adopted to control the occurrence of professional negligence in general
